On Sunday afternoon we could hear distant thunder rattling the towns along the mouth of the Penobscot River, but we were spared the fury. Temperatures dropped into the 40s overnight as the North Wind blew in and carried the humidity of the past few weeks out into the Gulf of Maine. I met a man outside of Boyce’s hotel who had driven through the storm. I had the windshield wipers going full steam and I still had to pull over, he said. It had been 90-something degrees at Sebago Lake yesterday and now the air is clear.
When Fay’s hibiscus flowers, we know September is around the corner
The cool dry air persisted through Monday and Tuesday morning greeted us like the day before. This is the change to which we are all attuned. Yes, no doubt there are dog days still ahead of us, but the Halloween display is already up at the pharmacy and the school principal across the street will greet children at the elementary school in a week’s time.
