This morning at 5:15, I took the dogs outside for their nature break. I left Holly in the yard with the front door open and took Eddy inside, leashed him, and prepped for our morning walk. As I was loading him in the car, I heard the unmistakeable yap-bark of a nearby fox. I quickly closed the trunk and moved into the yard with Holly, where she was blissfully unaware of the high-pitched fox screech. I saw the critter across the street heading away from the house, yapping in complaint as he trotted away.
I once thought any fox you saw in daylight was probably rabid, since I didn’t see many foxes in the wild as a kid. Life on the island has corrected that view. Here, foxes are still very wary of humans and their culture — pets, fences, cars — but they are not shy.
