(A couple of fox pups playing by the side of the road on another occasion)

Last night, just after bedtime our dog Holly began to whine. Out front across the street, I heard or fox yipping. Shining our flashlight into the vacant lot, I made out three sets of reflecting eyes in the rushes. Soon, one animal emerged and trotted across the street to the Community Center. By her size and shape it seemed to be the mother fox — this was clear in the moonlit night. Then, one moved in the opposite direction, and I never got a clean look. Finally, the third followed the path of the first, and when it crossed the road, I was taken aback. This one seemed to move like a raccoon, waddling more than trotting. Its body was plump and closer to the ground, as if on smaller (proportionally) legs than its predecessor. I wonder if a big raccoon might be able to hold its own against a fox. Or whether there might be some kind of alliance.
